Izet Haxhia extradited, the convicted of Azem Hajdari's assassination

Izet Haxhia, former bodyguard of Sali Berisha during 1992-1997, sentenced to 25 years in prison for co-operation in Azem Hajdari's assassination, is extradited from Turkey to Albania.

The plane he traveled from from Istambul landed on the Rinas Airport at 20:07 minutes.

Accompanied by employees of the Tirana Police Directorate and the escort body of the Prison Director, he was taken to 313 prison, Tirana.

Haxhia is expected to undergo a lengthy judicial process in Albania.

Earlier, he asked the Albanian authorities to guarantee the development of a fair and orderly judicial process.

Two weeks ago he was self submitted in Turkish police.

He was ordered by the Turkish court there to not to leave for 12 years. The decision to be extradited to Albania was taken in February this year.

His extradition to Albania could lead to the reopening of the 'Hajdari' file, as Izet Haxhia has repeatedly voiced that there is evidence blaming former Prime Minister Sali Berisha that he was part of the scenario that led to Azem Hajdari's execution a few meters away from the Democratic Party headquarters.

Izet Haxhia was arrested in Turkey in 2006. The Criminal Procedure Code provides that the decision will be reviewed when the extradition of the convicted judge in absentia is provided with the express condition of the retrial of the case.

In this case, the request for review may be filed within 30 days from the date the person was extradited.

So, according to the Albanian legislation, the Albanian justice now must decide within one month whether to reopen the trial or put into effect the 25 years sentence.
