LONDON — Another inspiring success story from the Albanian diaspora is drawing attention after Elena Daci, whose family originates from Has in northern Albania, completed her studies at the prestigious University of Cambridge with outstanding results.

Her achievement is particularly notable because of the subject she chose for her final thesis. In a paper of approximately 10,000 words, Daci examined and compared “Lahuta e Malësisë” (The Highland Lute) by renowned Albanian poet and Franciscan Gjergj Fishta with Homer’s “Iliad.”
By bringing Fishta’s celebrated epic into an academic study at one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Daci placed an important work of Albanian literature alongside one of the foundational masterpieces of Western classical literature.

Although she was born and lives in the United Kingdom, Daci has maintained a strong connection with her family’s homeland. She reportedly returns to Has every summer, preserving her connection to Albanian traditions, culture and the region from which her family originates.
The Hasi Cultural Association also congratulated Daci on her achievement, describing it as a source of pride for Has and for Albanians more broadly. The association praised her parents as well for their support and dedication to their daughter’s education.
Daci’s story represents another example of the achievements of young people from the Albanian diaspora, demonstrating how academic excellence can also become a way of bringing Albanian culture and literature to international audiences.
Her decision to place Fishta’s “Lahuta e Malësisë” in dialogue with Homer’s “Iliad” at Cambridge makes the achievement particularly significant: an Albanian literary work rooted in the history and traditions of the northern Albanian highlands became the subject of scholarly analysis at one of the world's leading academic institutions.
