TIRANA, Albania — Albanian cardiologist Edvin Prifti has reignited international debate over the origins of COVID-19 after discussing the controversial DEFUSE project, a research proposal that has become part of the broader discussion surrounding laboratory safety, coronavirus research, and the possibility of a laboratory-related origin of the pandemic.

What Was the DEFUSE Project?
The DEFUSE project was a research proposal submitted in 2018 by a group of international scientists seeking funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The proposal focused on studying bat coronaviruses and developing methods to identify and prevent future coronavirus threats. It involved researchers from several institutions, including scientists who had previously conducted coronavirus-related research.
According to publicly available information, DARPA did not approve funding for the project.
The existence of DEFUSE became widely discussed after researchers and journalists examined whether some of the proposed experiments were relevant to questions about the origins of SARS-CoV-2.
Prifti’s Claims About the Documents
During the interview, Prifti said that he became aware of the project through an email exchange involving scientists working in the field of virology.
He claimed that the material described research involving genetic modifications of coronaviruses and argued that it was an important piece of information in understanding the events before the pandemic.
“I read the project and understood that it was problematic,” Prifti said during the interview, describing his reaction after seeing the documents.
He also stated that he did not publicly share the information at the time because he considered himself only a recipient of the communication and did not want to become involved.
The Wuhan Laboratory Debate
The discussion around DEFUSE has become connected to the broader COVID-19 lab leak hypothesis, which suggests that the pandemic could have started through an accidental release from a laboratory.
Supporters of this theory point to the existence of advanced coronavirus research before the outbreak and the location of the first known COVID-19 cases near the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
However, many scientists continue to consider a natural origin possible and argue that there is still no definitive evidence proving that SARS-CoV-2 was created or released from a laboratory.
International investigations have reached different conclusions, and the scientific community remains divided over the available evidence.
Claims About Scientists and Unusual Deaths
In the interview, Prifti also claimed that several scientists who had knowledge of information related to COVID-19 research later died under suspicious circumstances.
He mentioned researchers including Frank Plummer, a Canadian virologist who died in 2020, and other scientists whose deaths or personal circumstances have become part of online discussions about the pandemic.
Authorities and independent investigations have not established a connection between these deaths and COVID-19 research.
Medical experts and researchers have repeatedly warned that extraordinary claims require strong evidence, especially when they involve allegations of deliberate actions against scientists.
Prifti’s Personal Story and Legal Battles
Beyond the COVID-19 debate, Prifti also spoke about threats he says he received in late 2020, claiming that he reported them to authorities in Albania.
He linked these events to later legal disputes involving him and described his experience with investigations by Albanian institutions.
Prifti, a well-known cardiologist with international experience, has previously worked with medical researchers abroad and has been involved in several public controversies in Albania.
