U.S. State Department Report Highlights Albania's Anti-Government Protests Over Sazan Island Development

According to the latest security assessment, public protests in Albania often attract hundreds or even thousands of participants and frequently disrupt traffic, particularly along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard in central Tirana, where many government institutions, foreign embassies, and cultural landmarks are located.

The report notes that Molotov cocktails have occasionally been used during demonstrations, although they are typically thrown at buildings rather than individuals.

OSAC: Sazan Island Project Sparked Nationwide Protests

The U.S. report specifically refers to the wave of anti-government demonstrations that began on May 31, 2026, saying the protests were initially triggered by opposition to a luxury tourism development project on Albania's Sazan Island.

According to OSAC, the movement started as a series of local environmental protests against the controversial development. However, after police dispersed the initial gatherings, the demonstrations quickly expanded across the country.

"The gatherings began as local environmental demonstrations, but after police dispersed these gatherings, thousands of Albanians took to the streets in major cities," the report states.

Movement Expanded Beyond Environmental Concerns

The report says the protests soon evolved beyond environmental issues, becoming a broader movement against alleged government corruption.

According to OSAC, demonstrators increasingly raised anti-corruption demands, while some protests escalated into violent confrontations.

The assessment reflects growing international attention toward Albania's domestic political climate as demonstrations have continued for weeks.
