Kosovo police have detained two individuals in North Mitrovica suspected of operating as employees of the Post of Serbia and distributing mail without authorisation, in a development that could further strain administrative and jurisdictional tensions in northern Kosovo.
According to local authorities, the arrests took place on April 7, 2026, after a police tip-off that two men were delivering postal items, including court documents and other registered mail, on behalf of the Serbian postal service in the predominantly Serb-populated part of northern Kosovo.
Officials from the Kosovo Police confirmed that the two were stopped and detained in downtown North Mitrovica after being found in possession of mail items they were suspected of distributing. The police characterized the activity as suspected “illegal postal distribution,” given that Kosovo authorities do not recognize the operational status of the Post of Serbia within Kosovo’s legal framework.
The move comes amid a broader context of disputed institutions and services in northern Kosovo, where Serbia-based agencies have historically continued operations despite Pristina’s efforts to assert regulatory control.
