Austrian newspaper Der Standard has published a critical analysis claiming that Albania’s path toward EU membership is drifting further away under Prime Minister Edi Rama, highlighting broader concerns across the Balkans.
In the analysis by journalist Adelheid Woelfl, a clear gap is emphasized between the European aspirations of countries like Albania and Kosovo and the political reality on the ground. The report argues that recent decisions by Rama—particularly his stance in defending close allies amid corruption allegations—risk undermining key democratic institutions and slowing Albania’s EU integration process.
The article also draws parallels with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, suggesting that both leaders are not prioritizing core European values such as rule of law, transparency, and separation of powers. According to the analysis, such governance trends place countries like Albania and Serbia further from meeting EU criteria, despite official ambitions to join the bloc.
Woelfl notes that while some Western Balkan countries—such as Montenegro—are advancing faster in the accession process, the region as a whole still faces structural challenges. The European Union continues to insist on merit-based enlargement, requiring deep reforms in judiciary systems and anti-corruption efforts before membership can progress.
The analysis has sparked debate across Albania, Kosovo, and the wider Balkans, where EU integration remains a central political and societal goal.
