The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 8th, when Captain Anamali, commander of the tourist boat “Drini”, operated by the Municipality of Shkodër, had embarked on a cruise with a group of visitors. Despite strong winds, several tourists insisted on swimming in the lake’s waters. The turbulent conditions quickly proved dangerous, as currents began to carry the swimmers away from the boat.

Recognizing the immediate danger, Captain Anamali first attempted to assist them using life buoys. When that wasn't enough, he jumped into the water himself to rescue them. Thanks to his swift and courageous actions, the tourists were brought to safety — but tragically, Anamali was unable to return to his vessel and lost his life in the process.

His selfless act has deeply moved the public across Albania. Many have hailed him as a true hero, a man whose courage and humanity cost him his own life while saving others.

President Bajram Begaj honored Anamali’s memory, describing him as a “social role model” and a “heroic soul.”

Arben Anamali had been working for the Municipality of Shkodër for a year as a licensed boat captain. He was also a devoted father of two children.

His sacrifice will be remembered as a powerful symbol of bravery, compassion, and selflessness — a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those he saved and the countless others inspired by his courage.
