Charles McGonigal, the former director of the FBI's Counterintelligence in New York, has been arrested for his ties to Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire who has been sanctioned by the United States and was criminally charged last year for violating those sanctions.

The 54-year-old is accused of violating US sanctions by trying to remove Deripaska from the sanctions list. McGonigal is one of the highest-ranking former FBI officials ever to be charged with a crime, Albanian media writes.
