One year in prison for Mihal Kokedhima, the restaourant-owner who attacked the tourists in Vlora

The Vlora Court sentenced on Tuesday Mihal Kokedhima to one year in prison, who has been found guilty of violence against a group of foreign tourists and Albanian associates.

Kokedhima was charged by the Vlora Prosecutor's Office with three offenses of "property destruction", "intentional injury" and "intimidation" and is in Vlora's custody.

The incident with a family of Spanish tourists and Albanian associates occurred in mid-August at the Bar Restaurant "Panorma" in Porto Palermo, a touristic area on the Albanian Riviera.

According to police testimony, the Spanish family and Albanian companions reduced their order for food at lunch at the restaurant but faced violent owner backlash. The incident escalated when a group of Spanish tourists and Albanian companions got in the car to leave without paying the bill, and the owner Kokedhima was hanging in the front of the car by punching the glass and breaking it as the vehicle drove around 3 km, from Porto Palermo to Qeparo. Saranda Police intervention has extinguished the incident which was recorded from inside the car in a video that was posted on social networks causing strong regimes in Albania and beyond.

Following the incident, the authorities said the Bar Restaurant "Panorma" has been built illegally in the seaside area and the National Construction Inspectorate demolished the facility. The intervention of the authorities sparked reactions to the legal basis followed in the demolition of the facility that was in the process of legalization, but also questions about a series of responsible institutions that had not previously acted to demolish the illegal building that had been operating as a business unit for many years.
