Council of Europe cancels the election observation mission in Albania
 

The Congress of the Regional and Local Authorities, the Council of Europe's independent body, has announced today that has canceled the mission of its observers for local elections due to uncertainties over the conduct of elections and possible uncertainties in some areas of the country. The Democratic leader Lulzim Basha reacted immediately stating that it is a political decision, since the June 30 is not legally a day of elections


The Congress of Regional and Local Authorities, announced today the withdrawal from the June 30 local elections monitoring. Congress is an independent structure of the Council of Europe devoted to local democracy. The observation mission in Albania was foreseen to consist of 26 members. The cause of the cancellation was made according to the announcement "the continued uncertainty regarding the organization of the June 30 local elections and possible security risks in some areas where the observers could be displaced."

Shortly after this announcement, Democratic leader Lulzim Basha reacted, according to him this decision was taken "because June 30 is not legally a day of elections in Albania. It is a clear political decision...
