Albania allows again the import of cars older than 10 years although among countries with highest pollution level

Since January of this year in Albania it is not allowed to import vehicles older than 10 years from production.

The decision taken in the protection of the environment is requested to be amended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku.

Oculus News sources revealed the Minister asked to the working group to revise the decision given by her predecessor, favoring thus the old car dealers, while simultaneously influencing negatively in the environmental pollution.

The proposal comes at a time when Albania ranks in the countries with the highest level of pollution, even several times more the acceptable rate by the European Union.

According to a WTO report, the level of pollution in Albania is equal to the consumption of 7 cigarettes per day. Experts even say that 50 per cent of environmental pollution in Albania comes as a result of vehicle pollution.

In Tirana, the number of cars per km2 is estimated to be greater than Amsterdam or Berlin.

It was precisely in these conditions that it was decided to stop the introduction of old cars in Albania, requiring as a condition the consumption of euro 5.

This is because an old car contaminates 4 times more than a new vehicle.

But in the conditions when EU countries are demanding that circulation be allowed only by euro 6, stimulating projects to leave the old car market in Albania, Minister Balluku seems to have decided reopen the port for the old cars.
