Albania Arrests 23-Year-Old Suspected of Smuggling 5 Filipinos and 2 Afghans Toward Montenegro

Albanian Border Police have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of transporting seven foreign nationals toward Montenegro in exchange for payment, allegedly to facilitate their illegal crossing of the border.

The arrest was carried out as part of Operation “Transit 4,” led by the Shkodër Directorate of Border and Migration as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on the illegal facilitation of migrant crossings.

According to the Albanian State Police, the suspect, identified by the initials L. M., is a resident of Ura Vajgurore. His vehicle was stopped by officers on the Vukpalaj–Aliaj road in northern Albania.

During the inspection, officers discovered seven foreign nationals inside the vehicle: five citizens of the Philippines and two citizens of Afghanistan. Investigators suspect that the individuals were being transported for payment with the intention of crossing illegally into neighboring Montenegro.

The vehicle allegedly used to transport the foreign nationals was seized as material evidence.

The case has been referred to the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction in Shkodër for further legal proceedings.

The arrest highlights the continued attention of Albanian authorities to suspected migrant-smuggling networks operating along the country's northern border. Albania's geographical position along routes connecting the Western Balkans with Montenegro and other European destinations makes border surveillance and the investigation of suspected cross-border facilitation activities an ongoing law-enforcement priority.

However, the allegations against the arrested man remain subject to investigation, and his guilt has not been established by a court.
