The 35-year-old Italian homeowner was alone inside when he heard noises outside. He took a legally held firearm and fired several shots toward the group. One bullet struck the 25-year-old, who suffered fatal injuries.
The other suspected intruders managed to escape. The homeowner himself immediately called the Carabinieri and requested emergency assistance, but attempts to save the young man were unsuccessful. The victim reportedly lived in the province of Turin and was of Albanian origin.
Investigators are now working to establish exactly what happened and determine the roles of everyone involved. The farmhouse reportedly had no gate or fencing, while construction materials were stored in the courtyard.
The firearm used by the homeowner was legally registered. However, the 35-year-old is under investigation for homicide, as authorities examine whether the use of the weapon was justified under the circumstances.
