Albania has officially surpassed the milestone of 1 million registered road vehicles for the first time, reflecting the country's continued growth in private transportation and vehicle ownership.
According to official data for the end of 2025, there were 1.048 million vehicles registered with either active or temporarily deregistered status, representing a 9.3% increase compared to 2024.
The rise highlights the steady expansion of Albania's automotive fleet despite the country's relatively small population.
Passenger Cars Continue to Dominate Albania's Vehicle Fleet
Passenger cars remain by far the largest segment of Albania's vehicle park, accounting for 80.8% of all registered vehicles.
This growth has significantly increased the country's motorization rate. During 2025, Albania recorded an average of 361 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, up from 326 per 1,000 residents the previous year.
The figures indicate a continued increase in personal mobility and private vehicle ownership.
Tirana Leads in Total Vehicles, While Durrës Tops Car Ownership Per Capita
The Tirana County continues to hold the largest share of Albania's registered vehicles, representing 34.7% of the national total.
It is followed by:
- Durrës: 13.6%
- Fier: 9.1%
However, when vehicle ownership is measured relative to population, Durrës ranks first nationwide, with 535 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, well above the national average.
Albania's Vehicle Fleet Remains Relatively Old
Despite the growing number of vehicles on Albanian roads, the country's automotive fleet remains relatively aged.
Official figures show that:
- 55.3% of all registered vehicles were manufactured between 2000 and 2010.
- 45.7% of passenger cars are between 11 and 20 years old.
These figures illustrate the continued reliance on imported second-hand vehicles.
Manual Transmission Still Holds the Majority
Although automatic transmission vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, manual gearbox vehicles still dominate the Albanian market, accounting for 55.9% of the country's registered vehicles.
The trend nevertheless suggests a gradual shift toward automatic vehicles as newer imports enter the market.
Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz Remain Albania's Most Popular Brands
German manufacturers continue to dominate Albania's roads.
At the end of 2025:
- Volkswagen ranked first, representing 19.7% of passenger cars.
- Mercedes-Benz followed closely with 18.1%.
Both brands have traditionally maintained a strong presence in Albania due to the popularity of imported used vehicles from Western Europe.
Diesel Continues to Dominate, but Electric Vehicles Are Growing Rapidly
Diesel remains the preferred fuel type among Albanian drivers.
By the end of 2025:
- 72.1% of passenger cars were powered by diesel.
However, the transition toward cleaner transportation is beginning to accelerate.
The number of electric vehicles increased by 91.2% during 2025 compared to the previous year, reflecting growing consumer interest in low-emission mobility and the gradual adoption of electric transportation across Albania.
As infrastructure expands and electric vehicle options become more accessible, this segment is expected to continue its rapid growth in the coming years.
