Following the measure, diesel prices have dropped to €1.65 per liter, avoiding a projected increase that could have pushed the price to €1.81 per liter. The new price is also 2 cents lower compared with the previous level.
Current fuel prices in Montenegro are:
- Diesel: €1.65 per liter
- Eurosuper 98: €1.68 per liter
- Eurosuper 95: €1.64 per liter
The decision was based on assessments by the Ministry of Finance, which determined that reducing excise taxes would help protect household budgets, ease inflationary pressures, and provide support to domestic businesses.
Montenegrin authorities said the intervention was necessary due to disruptions in international energy markets and growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have contributed to uncertainty over global oil prices.
The government also stressed that such fiscal measures must be implemented carefully, especially during the summer tourism season, when fuel consumption increases significantly due to the arrival of foreign visitors.
Officials emphasized that public funds must continue to prioritize essential sectors, including healthcare, education, pensions, and infrastructure, while maintaining fiscal stability.
The situation will continue to be closely monitored, and the government has not ruled out additional measures if budget conditions and fiscal capacity allow further intervention.
