North Macedonia Reduces Fuel Excise Tax to Limit Impact of Rising Oil Prices

SKOPJE, North Macedonia – The Government of North Macedonia has approved a decision to change the calculation method and reduce excise duties on gasoline and diesel in an effort to ease the impact of rising fuel prices across the country.

 

The measure aims to protect citizens’ living standards and support the domestic economy at a time when international crude oil prices have recorded significant increases. Government officials said they are closely monitoring daily movements in global energy markets in order to respond quickly with additional measures if necessary.

According to authorities, the reduction in excise duties will lower the effect of rising costs on final consumers. Official calculations show that without the intervention, gasoline prices would have increased by approximately 4 denars per liter, while after the reduction the expected increase will be around 3 denars per liter.

The impact on diesel prices is expected to be even more significant. Without the measure, diesel was projected to rise by about 8 denars per liter, while the increase is now expected to be limited to approximately 6 denars per liter.

The government said the decision represents a temporary protective measure aimed at reducing pressure on households and businesses amid uncertainty in international oil markets.

The new decision has now been submitted to the Energy Regulatory Commission, which is expected to officially approve the updated retail fuel prices reflecting the effects of the excise reduction.

Authorities added that they will continue monitoring market developments and remain prepared to take further action if needed to protect consumers and maintain economic stability.
