The sudden eruption of violence and protests in Zvërnec, Vlorë—complete with clashes involving private security guards—has caught the attention of the entire country. But according to top Albanian criminology expert Ervin Karamuço, there is a much darker, geopolitical undercurrent to these local disruptions.
regional rivals and broader anti-Western actors like Russia, to sabotage a massive $4 billion investment tied directly to the family of U.S. President Donald Trump.Local Greviances, Global Exploitation
Karamuço was careful to clarify that the local protesters have legitimate questions. He strongly advocated for total transparency from the Albanian government regarding land deeds, property ownership, and legal procedures in Zvërnec. However, he warned that genuine local issues are being hijacked by outside forces.
The expert pointed out a highly suspicious pattern: the sheer speed and coordination of the backlash. Almost overnight, social media exploded, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and interest groups that had been completely silent on similar issues in cities like Lezhë or Tirana suddenly mobilized in Vlorë.
"The story of the Trump family’s interest in a major investment in the Vlorë region has been a bitter pill to swallow for neighboring countries," Karamuço stated during the broadcast. "It was a massive thorn in their side, and they just waited for the perfect moment to strike."
The Shadow of Russia and Regional Sabotage
While regional competitors like Greece and Montenegro naturally want to keep multi-billion-dollar investments for themselves, the broader geopolitical implications point to bigger actors. In the volatile Western Balkans, major economic plays by high-profile American figures are always a target for Russia, which actively seeks to disrupt Western alignment and economic growth in the region.
Karamuço explained that while foreign states might not be directly organizing the locals on the ground, they are acting as an "external glue," magnifying the chaos through digital propaganda and funded interest groups to make Albania look unstable.
"There is a clear alignment of external factors stepping in to sabotage this massive investment in the south of the country," Karamuço warned.
What Happens if Albania Turns Its Back on the West?
For Karamuço, the stakes couldn't be higher. If Albania allows these protests to scare away the Trump family’s $4 billion project, the nation's reputation on the global stage will be permanently damaged.
He left the audience with a harsh, sobering warning about what happens if Albania surrenders to foreign pressure and regional sabotage:
- Lost Credibility: Serious global investors will blacklist Albania as an unstable, high-risk environment.
- Economic Stagnation: High-tier Western capital will completely bypass the country.
- A Regional Dumpster: Major funding will flow directly to competitors who are laughing all the way to the bank.
"I am not for turning our backs on foreign investment, because we will never be taken seriously by global powers or major international financial groups again," Karamuço concluded passionately. "They will say Albania is just a dumpster where you only send waste, not money. The real money will go straight to Montenegro and Greece, and never to Albania again."
The Bottom Line
Albania stands at a critical crossroads. Can the government resolve the Zvërnec property disputes with total transparency, or will the country allow external state actors to derail a historic partnership with the United States?
