Delphi Forum: Hoxha Says EU Enlargement in Western Balkans Is a Strategic Necessity for Europe

Albania’s Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha has emphasized that European Union enlargement in the Western Balkans is a “strategic necessity,” speaking during the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece.
Participating in high-level discussions alongside regional and EU counterparts, Hoxha underlined the importance of accelerating the integration process for Western Balkan countries. The forum brought together foreign ministers and policymakers at a critical moment for the region’s European future, with a shared focus on strengthening cooperation and reaffirming commitment to EU expansion.

According to official discussions at the forum, EU enlargement is increasingly viewed not only as a political process but as a geopolitical priority. Leaders stressed that integrating the Western Balkans would contribute to greater stability, security, and resilience across Europe, particularly in the face of growing global challenges and regional vulnerabilities.

Hoxha highlighted that the region’s integration into the EU framework is essential for building a stronger and more secure Europe. Talks at Delphi also focused on key areas such as energy security, regional connectivity, and digital transformation—sectors seen as crucial for aligning the Western Balkans with EU standards and policies.

The minister joined a ministerial meeting involving representatives from both EU member states and Western Balkan countries, aiming to reaffirm political commitment to enlargement and set the stage for further progress. The discussions are expected to contribute to upcoming EU policy directions, including those linked to future Council presidencies.

Beyond political commitments, participants stressed the need for concrete support, credible reforms, and a merit-based accession process. Strengthening regional cooperation, addressing security threats, and enhancing economic convergence were also identified as key pillars for advancing EU integration in the Western Balkans.

The Delphi Forum discussions reflect a renewed momentum around EU enlargement, with Albania positioning itself as an active contributor to regional stability and European integration efforts.
