The Albanian Parliament has officially ratified the long-term cooperation and support agreement with Ukraine, initially signed in January this year during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. This ratification marks a reaffirmation of Albania’s steadfast support for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian aggression.
Albania’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, stated that the agreement aims to enable the Republic of Albania to provide political, military, technical, defensive, and humanitarian support to Ukraine, in line with its capacities and as part of both bilateral and international commitments.
"Albania has made it clear that it stands on the side of freedom and international law," Minister Hasani emphasized during the parliamentary session.
Since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, Albania has consistently aligned itself with international law and in support of the Ukrainian people, Hasani reiterated. He added, "As a reliable NATO member, we take on the necessary responsibilities to defend the international order that ensures peace and freedom for all."
Through this agreement, Albania will engage in four key areas:
-
Security and defense,
-
Accountability and international justice,
-
Humanitarian aid and reconstruction,
-
Preparedness and joint response in case of escalation.
These pillars reflect a comprehensive commitment to cooperation and support under any scenario.
Albania has demonstrated its support for Ukraine on multiple occasions, including by hosting the “Ukraine – Southeastern Europe” Summit in Tirana in February of last year. That summit concluded with the adoption of a 12-point declaration, which underscored that Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine remains the greatest threat to European security. It also condemned the invasion as a flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Charter, and a crime against the Ukrainian people.
With this ratified agreement, Albania solidifies its position as a proactive contributor to regional stability and international peace efforts.
