Albanian asylum claims in Europe remain high

The latest data from the European Statistics Agency "Eurostat" show that asylum applications for the second quarter of 2020 fell for the first time by 70%. But the demands of Albanian citizens for asylum in some European countries still remain high.

According to data referring to the period from April to June 2020, about 840 Albanian citizens sought asylum in France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. In France, the asylum applications of Albanians are 205 and occupy 44% of the total asylum applications, while in Germany they are 140 and occupy 30% of the applications. In Italy they are 55 and occupy 12%. Meanwhile, the highest number of asylum applications by Albanians for the second quarter of 2020 is recorded in Great Britain with 440 people. Pending applications for international protection are under consideration in these countries.

According to Eurostat, some 842,000 asylum applications are still pending in European Union member states. Meanwhile, based on Eurostat data from January 2019 to August 2020, according to the magazine "Monitor", about 30.5 thousand Albanians have applied for asylum in one of the countries of the European Union and others. Most of them are young people. According to Eurostat data, 23.8 thousand people, or 78% of the total applications for this period are people up to 34 years old.

The leaving of young peoplefrom Albania remains one of the biggest problems facing the country. In many regions, the natural increase of the population has decreased and the demographic movements of recent years have significantly reduced the pace of economic development.
