Albania among the 10 countries with the highest number of asylum seekers in the EU

 
 According to the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) report, Albania is continuing to be among the top ten countries with the highest number of asylum seekers in Europe in 2019.

According to the report, the number of asylum applications from Kosovo citizens declined compared to a year ago. Iraqi citizens, who top the list of ten countries with the most asylum applications, saw a 19 percent drop in 2019.

While applications from Turkish citizens increased by 10 percent. Albania ranks behind Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, and Nigeria in the number of asylum applications. The report cites that Syrian citizens involved in the war were the biggest beneficiaries of asylum in the EU, about 85 percent of the applicants.

Whereas for the Western Balkan countries that do not need visas to enter the European Union countries, the number of applicants was about 1% for the citizens of North Macedonia and 6% for the citizens of Albania.
