Albanian-Spanish Consortium wins Tender for the Reconstruction of Gjirokastra Castle

 The Albanian-Spanish consortium V "Proskene Conservation & Cultural Heritage" & "Cultural Heritage Without Borders" has won the tender of 257 thousand euros for the reconstruction of the Gjirokastra Fortress.

According to the details of the tender announcement by the ADF contracting authority, 9 companies participated in the competition, of which 3 fulfilled the conditions of the bid and the Albanian-Spanish consortium was announced the winner.

The work will consist of: Identifying, Developing priority measures to address urgent security concerns and preventing the loss of heritage structures in Gjirokastra Castle, but no details are given on development time.

The reconstruction of the Gjirokastra Fortress is part of the investments being made under the project "Integrated Urban and Tourism Development in Albania" funded by the World Bank Group. The project aims to play a key role in orienting and demonstrating the usefulness that this innovative integrated approach has for regional development and the opportunities it creates for addressing a number of objectives that are also part of the National Territorial Development Strategy.

The Integrated Urban and Tourist Development Project marks an important step for the benefit of citizens, combining attention to urban realities in the country with efforts to increase the contribution of the tourism sector to the economy.

Funded by the World Bank and the Albanian Government, this project, which reaches a cost of € 63.8 million, will aim to:

i. improvement of urban infrastructure;

ii. increasing the value of tourism assets;

iii. strengthening institutional capacity to support economic and social development related to tourism.

The project will focus on activities in the cities of Berat, Gjirokastra, Permet, and Saranda, but will also include other tourist destinations that complement this diverse southern Albania route.

The project is classified as Category B in the World Bank classifications, which means that the interventions undertaken within it should not have irreversible social or environmental impacts. The works will tend to be placed over the existing infrastructure footprint.
