Bulgarian diplomat, Solomon Passy: We are pushing Albania and North Macedonia towards Russia, Turkey, and Iran

Postponing the opening of negotiations for EU membership of North Macedonia and Albania is not in Bulgaria's interest, said the former Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy in a Bulgarian TV interview today.

He recalls that the start of this process with both countries is "postponed for the third time".

"Following the veto of French President Emanuel Macron, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin must have ordered a glass of champagne. To whom are we pushing Macedonia and Albania? Are we pushing them into the hands of Russia, Turkey, Iran? Just remember what President Putin did to prevent Macedonia on its path to NATO," Passy said.

The former Bulgarian foreign minister is quite forthright in his statements when he says he believes serious efforts are underway to keep Serbia in the sphere of Russian influence.

"What can we do with Macron and his irrational decision," Passy asks, adding that current Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva may try to persuade him to change his mind.

According to him, Bulgaria has no interest that North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo to take steps backward.

"Albania and North Macedonia will one day become members of the European Union, but the question arises at what speed this will happen," the former minister added.
