Former French President Jacques Chirac died at the age of 86.

His son-in-law confirmed that Chirac died Thursday morning, "surrounded by family".

Chirac has served two terms as president of France, from 1995 to 2007.

One of his main political reforms was to cut the presidential term from seven to five years.

Chirac has introduced France into the Eurozone.

He has been opposed to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

When NATO began bombing targets in the former Yugoslavia in 1999 to halt violence in Kosovo, Chirac said that the airstrikes had begun to protect "peace in our land, peace in Europe!".
