Rinas Airport earns to much revenues, Albanian Government asks negotiations to lower the tickets cost

The concession of the Rinas Airport results in economic disbalance, in the disadvantage of the Albanian state. Top Channel has learned that "BDO Albania" has completed the economic audit of the concession contract of the country's sole international airport.

The detailed audit findings are expected to be made public only after the report has been submitted to both parties, ie the Government and the concession company of the airport.

But Top Channel pretends has learned that by auditing financial indicators for the entire duration of the concession, indicates that the concession company has earned much more revenues than anticipated in the initial scenario.

For years, Tirana International Airport has become one of the highest-performing concessions in Albania. According to the official balance sheet, for 2017, the company realized a profit rate of 22 million euros, or 46 percent above gross income.

In the concession contract signed in 2004 there is a point, which entitles each of the parties to seek independent review of the economic position of the concession. This was the space used by the Albanian government last Summer to ask for a concession audit by an independent expert.

But what happens now?

After the audit by an independent expert, the government has the right to start negotiations with the concession company to seek restoration of the economic concession balance, or otherwise to claim compensation.

According to the forecasts in the contract, this compensation may come in several ways, including direct payment to the budget or lowering airport fees, which would automatically lead to the reduction of the ticket price for citizens.
