In three separate incidents — two in Durrës and one in Kavajë — drivers whose vehicle documentation was reportedly not in order allegedly offered money to police officers in an attempt to avoid administrative sanctions.
Police referred the cases to the prosecution service, which initiated criminal proceedings against three individuals: K. M., 47, and E. A., 30, both residents of Durrës, and A. K., 35, a resident of Peqin.
The three are suspected of the criminal offense of active corruption of persons exercising public functions under Albanian law. They are being prosecuted while at liberty, meaning they have not been taken into custody in connection with these cases.
The procedural materials have been forwarded to the prosecution service for further legal action.
The cases highlight the enforcement challenges faced by traffic police in Albania, where alleged attempts to use informal payments to evade penalties can undermine the consistent application of traffic laws. The allegations against the three drivers remain subject to the legal process, and their guilt has not been established by a court.
