Born into a wealthy family, Hasan Prishtina chose to use his resources and influence for the Albanian cause. He was one of the key political figures and supporters of the 1912 Albanian uprising, a movement that contributed to the declaration of Albania’s independence, local media say.

Historical accounts describe how he used a significant part of his personal fortune to support the national movement, including financing weapons and assisting Albanian fighters.

Instead of building personal wealth, Hasan Prishtina invested his resources in a political ideal. He left behind a legacy associated with patriotism, state-building, and sacrifice.

Mehmet Prishtina and the €36 million land controversy

More than a century later, the surname Prishtina appeared in a very different context.

Businessman Mehmet Prishtina was sentenced by the court to 10 years in prison and a €100,000 fine in connection with the case known as “Land 2”, involving allegations related to organized crime, money laundering, and the illegal transfer of public and socially owned properties.

According to the court case, the scheme involved state and socially owned land in valuable areas around Pristina and Graçanica, with the disputed property value estimated at around €36 million.

The case has attracted major public attention because of the scale of the alleged damage and the involvement of properties belonging to the public domain.

A painful contrast between two eras

Hasan Prishtina became a symbol of a generation that placed national ideals above personal wealth.

The case involving Mehmet Prishtina has triggered debate about the use of historical names and the responsibility that comes with public reputation.

Regardless of disputed claims about family connections to the historic figure, the contrast between the two stories has become a powerful public discussion: one man gave away his fortune in the name of a national cause, while another became associated with a court case involving valuable public property.

History does not preserve names because of family ties alone. It remembers the choices people make and the legacy they leave behind.
