Saranda Police Arrest 8 Suspects Over Illegal Beach Construction in Southern Albania

Authorities said the operation was carried out following on-site inspections and verification procedures focused on Albania’s coastline, where law enforcement has intensified efforts against unauthorized development. According to preliminary police findings, officers discovered active construction works at a structure made up of multiple sections—some reportedly extending into the water—in Neighborhood No. 1 of Sarandë.

During the intervention, police detained eight Albanian citizens in flagrante delicto, all suspected of being involved in the unauthorized works. The individuals are residents of Saranda, Delvinë, Lushnjë, Tirana, Lezhë, and Mat, reflecting what investigators believe may be a coordinated operation involving workers from multiple regions. Authorities also identified a female citizen, believed to be the owner or beneficiary of the beach area where the works were allegedly taking place, and officially declared her wanted as investigations continue.

The case is drawing significant attention as Saranda remains one of Albania’s most important tourism destinations, especially ahead of the summer season. Illegal construction along the Ionian coastline has long been a concern for local authorities, environmental groups, and tourism stakeholders, due to its potential impact on public access, coastal ecosystems, and the country’s international tourism image.

According to an official statement from the Albanian State Police, procedural actions have already been completed and the relevant institutions—including IKMT, IMT, and Municipal Police—have been notified and have begun demolition procedures on the illegal structures. The case is expected to be referred to prosecutors for further legal action.
