Gjirokastër Municipality Denies HIV/AIDS Claims Involving Mayor and Staff in Albania

Gjirokastër Municipality has officially denied reports alleging that its mayor and several employees were infected with HIV/AIDS, calling the claims false and misleading.

The reaction came on April 18 after media reports and social media discussions suggested that up to 18 municipal staff members and the mayor had tested positive. In a public statement cited by Vox News, local authorities firmly rejected the allegations, stating that no such infections had been confirmed among municipal officials.

The controversy appears to have originated from unverified claims circulating online, which sparked concern among residents and quickly gained traction. However, municipal representatives emphasized that the information lacks official confirmation and risks creating unnecessary panic in the community.

This incident highlights broader concerns about misinformation, especially regarding sensitive public health issues. Albania, while maintaining relatively low HIV prevalence, continues to focus on awareness and early diagnosis as key strategies in combating the virus.

Authorities have not indicated any ongoing investigation into the origin of the claims but urged the public and media to rely on verified sources before spreading such reports. The case underscores the importance of responsible reporting in maintaining public trust and avoiding stigma around health conditions.
