Nighttime Traffic Closures on Tirana–Durrës Highway: New Management Plan by ARRSH and State Police

The Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH), in cooperation with the State Police, has announced a new Traffic Management Plan for the Tirana–Durrës highway. This comes as a response to ongoing road surface repair works that have created significant traffic congestion and delays along one of the country’s busiest routes.

According to ARRSH, starting from Monday, October 14, vehicle circulation will be temporarily suspended during nighttime hours, specifically from 23:00 (11:00 PM) until 06:00 (6:00 AM). The night closures aim to allow workers to perform asphalt rehabilitation and safety improvements efficiently while minimizing daytime traffic disruptions.

Segments Affected by the Night Closures

The nighttime traffic blockages will apply only in the direction from Vorë to Durrës, covering several consecutive road sections. Each section is expected to undergo 1–2 days of work, after which the project will move on to the next.

Here is the detailed list of the affected road segments:

  1. Vorë – Maminas

  2. Maminas – Sukth

  3. Sukth – Fllakë

  4. Fllakë – Shkozet Overpass

  5. Shkozet Overpass – Dajlan Bridge (Ura e Dajlanit)

During these periods, traffic will be fully closed in each section under construction. Drivers are strongly advised to follow alternative routes provided by the authorities to avoid congestion and ensure road safety.

Recommended Alternative Route

To maintain mobility and ease the flow of vehicles, ARRSH has recommended a detour route for all motorists traveling toward Durrës during the nighttime closures. The alternative itinerary is as follows:

➡️ Vorë – Maminas – Katër Rrugët e Shijakut – Durrës

This route will remain open throughout the night and is expected to handle the diverted traffic while minimizing inconvenience for drivers. ARRSH also reminds drivers to follow the traffic signs and directions provided by road authorities and police patrols during these operations.

Upcoming Works in the Opposite Direction

Once the Vorë–Durrës direction is fully completed, ARRSH will begin rehabilitation work on the opposite lane, specifically the Dajlan Bridge–Vorë direction. The same segments and working schedule will be applied, again restricting nighttime traffic between 11 PM and 6 AM.

These phased operations are designed to ensure the entire Tirana–Durrës highway is resurfaced and improved without causing excessive daytime congestion on Albania’s most critical transport corridor.

Purpose and Importance of the Road Works

According to ARRSH, these interventions are essential for the long-term maintenance and safety of the Tirana–Durrës highway, which connects the capital city to the country’s main seaport and serves as a vital economic and tourist artery.

The resurfacing project includes:

  • Repairing damaged asphalt layers caused by heavy traffic and weather conditions

  • Reinforcing the road foundation and drainage systems

  • Improving driving comfort and vehicle safety

  • Reducing noise and vibration levels for nearby communities

ARRSH emphasized that while these works may cause temporary inconvenience, they are crucial to ensuring a smoother, safer, and longer-lasting roadway for all users.

ARRSH’s Call for Public Cooperation

In its official statement, ARRSH called on all road users for patience and understanding during this maintenance phase. The authority urged drivers to plan their trips ahead, avoid unnecessary travel during closure hours, and use the designated detours.

“These interventions are necessary to rehabilitate one of Albania’s most important road axes. We ask for the understanding and cooperation of all citizens while the work is being completed,” ARRSH stated.

The Albanian Road Authority also reassured the public that the project teams are working on a tight schedule, and all closures are temporary and limited to nighttime hours to reduce disruption to daytime commuters and cargo transporters.

The Tirana–Durrës highway renovation marks an important step toward improving Albania’s national infrastructure. With the coordinated effort of ARRSH and the State Police, the nighttime closures are expected to enhance efficiency, safety, and long-term durability of the country’s most traveled route.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and media updates, as the works progress through each segment.
