New Seasonal Virus Spreads Across Albania, Affecting Children and Elderly

A new seasonal virus is currently circulating in Albania, leading to a significant rise in patients seeking medical care—particularly children and the elderly.

New Seasonal Virus Spreads Across Albania, Affecting Children and Elderly

Family doctors report that the most common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, loss of balance, and in some cases, a mild temperature reaching up to 37.5°C.

The virus spreads quickly among family members and has become especially common following the return from summer holidays.

“We are seeing an increased flow of patients, mainly pediatric cases and those over 65 years old. Most present with mild gastrointestinal symptoms and in some cases with fever. If symptoms last longer than 2–3 days, patients should see their family doctor,” said Dr. Barie Karasani from Health Center No. 4 in Tirana.

Short-lived but Requires Careful Management

Although this seasonal illness is generally short in duration, proper care and treatment are essential. Doctors emphasize that self-medication should be avoided, and patients are advised to seek medical advice at the first signs of illness.

Medical professionals also warn that other viruses are currently circulating, making self-treatment—especially with antibiotics—an ineffective and potentially harmful choice.
