The University of Tirana (UT) continues to hold the leading position in attracting high school graduates, with over 11,000 new students enrolling for the upcoming academic year.
According to UT Rector Artan Hoxha, this year has seen 500 more applications compared to last year—an encouraging sign that more Albanian students are choosing to study at home rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
“This is a positive indicator that graduates are turning to our university rather than leaving the country,” said Rector Hoxha.
Popular Programs and Challenges
Programs in law, economics, and social sciences remain the most sought-after, showing a steady rise in interest. However, several other fields still struggle to attract students despite various policies designed to boost enrollment.
“We still have some areas, such as teaching, that are not chosen as much,” Hoxha noted.
New Teacher Training Initiative
For the first time, UT will also provide structured training for teachers and school leaders at the pre-university level.
“It is the first time the University of Tirana has taken a consolidated approach to training teachers and school directors. This integration helps support more comprehensive reforms in education,” the rector emphasized.
Enrollment and Support Measures
Out of 20,200 total applications nationwide, 12,000 graduates have chosen the University of Tirana, which this year offers 41 different study programs. To support its students, the university provides scholarships of 10,000 lek per month to more than 2,600 students each year.
With its strong academic reputation, expanded study opportunities, and increased investment in teacher training, the University of Tirana remains a cornerstone of higher education in Albania.
