The Marubi National Photo Archive has received one of the highest international recognitions in the field of cultural heritage. The archive of negatives, objects, and documents created by Pietro and Kel Marubi has been officially included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register.
This prestigious certification was granted by the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, underscoring the unique significance of the Marubi collection for the visual history of Albania and the wider region.
Housed at the National Museum of Photography “Marubi” in Shkodër, the archive holds an extraordinary wealth of Albanian cultural heritage. The collection, spanning several generations of photographers, captures pivotal moments, everyday life, and evolving identities from the late 19th century onwards.
“We are happy to share with you this international recognition of our cultural heritage, a treasure that belongs to all of us,” the institution stated in its announcement.
The inclusion in the UNESCO register affirms the global value of the Marubi legacy and ensures its preservation and promotion for future generations. It also places Albania firmly on the map of countries that safeguard and celebrate their historical memory through photographic art.
