From Tropoja to Hollywood: The Epic $32 Million Cinematic Project on the Haklaj Family

A film about Tropoja's Haklaj in Hollywood, details of the 32 million dollar project

The tragic, blood-stained history of the Haklaj family—a saga deeply embedded in modern Albanian history—is being adapted into a major international film project. Titled simply "Haklaj," this ambitious four-part cinematic series aims to shed light on the turbulent years between 1990 and 2000 in northern Albania, documenting the devastating cycle of blood feuds in Tropoja and politically motivated crimes that tore the family apart, as Albanian media reports.

With an initial budget of $32 million USD raised entirely through donations from influential global businesses and private donors, the project is backed by a collaborative team featuring a Swedish-American director and an Albanian director from Kosovo. The production is set to feature a massive ensemble cast of actors gathered from several Albanian-speaking regions.  The narrative promises an uncompromising look at the bitter realities of post-communist Albania, exploring the themes of tribal honor, political exploitation, and the destructive power of gjakmarrja (blood feuds).

Who is Jurgen Malaj? The Doctor Stepping into the Role of Fatmir Haklaj

At the heart of the casting buzz is the choice for the central protagonist, Fatmir Haklaj. According to widespread media reports, the heavy responsibility of wearing Fatmir’s "suit" has been offered to an unexpected figure: an Albanian doctor named Jurgen Malaj.

A Strange Twist of Fate

Malaj's connection to the project reads like a movie script itself. Born in Fier, he moved to Sweden after completing his medical studies, coincidentally settling in the exact same region where the surviving members of the Haklaj family currently reside.

Because of his staggering physical resemblance to Fatmir Haklaj, facial recognition software used for special identification cases reportedly calculated an 86% anthropological match between the doctor and the late historical figure.

While Malaj himself was the one to first break the news of the Hollywood project via a viral Facebook post, he has remained grounded about the opportunity. The young doctor has publically stated that while the project is moving forward, he is still carefully weighing the massive cultural and emotional weight of the role before officially signing on to portray one of Albania's most polarizing and tragic figures.
