Albania does not have the capacity to detect the new variant of the coronavirus: Dr. Koraqi says

Albanian microbiologist Andi Koraqi has rejected the rumors about the discovery of a new variant of coronavirus in Albania. Invited to a local media he said that our country does not have enough capacity to sequence the genetic material of the coronavirus.

"To my knowledge, it is difficult to say that we have a new type of coronavirus. Capacities are not enough to catch the mutations that the coronavirus undergoes. To detect a new mutation or variant we must sequence the genetic material of the coronavirus. At the moment we do not do this type of analysis it is impossible to catch it if we have a new type of coronavirus. Sequencing is an extremely expensive and difficult analysis."

Koraqi also clarified the genetic mutations of the virus, according to him the British one has changed 29 pairs of bases and can also change the clinical manifestations.

"All cells have a sequence of nucleic acids and are small mutations that do not affect the face of the cell but there are also large ones that change the face of the cell. British mutations are large and have changed 29 base pairs. Clinical manifestations may also change. So far it is under study. Today it is reported that you does not lose taste and smell, but the rest of the symptoms are the same. Another change is that of faster spread. On the other hand, these changes are not reported to affect the effectiveness of vaccines and antibodies."

According to Koraqi, enforcing rules such as wearing masks, hygiene and social distancing have been effective in preventing seasonal flu, but not effective for the coronavirus.
