Sexual crimes are increasing scarily in Albania, according to Prosecution

 The number of sexual crimes in the country has been increasing over the last three years. Referring to the official data of the General Prosecutor's Office, from 2017 to 2018, the number of criminal proceedings for sexual crimes has increased by 10.7 percent. While a year later, in 2019 the increase in the number of investigations launched for sexual crimes is almost 40 percent.

The annual report on the state of crime for the past year states that a total of 158 cases of sexual crimes have been registered, of which 49 have been convicted.

In terms of social and demographic data, 99 percent of defendants are men, over 18-years old, and 1 percent are women charged of sexual crime. Most of the defendants, nearly 66 percent of them, have minimal education and live in the cities.

The highest number of trials against persons accused of sexual crimes belongs to the Court of Tirana, which is prosecuted by Durrës and further down to Shkodra, Elbasan and Vlora.
