Schools in Italy will reopen on September 14. The news was given by the Italian Prime Minister himself, Giuseppe Conte, where he announced that on September 14 all students will return to schools, which have been closed since March due to the pandemic of COVID-19.

"Schools will reopen on this date with a range of measures, which are supposed to guarantee social distancing and maximum security," Conte told a news conference.

"The school is at the heart of government policy. The government has worked hard with the world of education as a whole, to set guidelines for reopening schools," he said.

"We are more prepared with the guidelines to get back to safety in September. We have made available an additional billion euros for further investment in schools, which will allow us to have a more modern, safer and comprehensive school environment. And in the Recovery Fund, an important chapter will be devoted to school interventions," said the Italian prime minister.

"School closures were a very painful choice and no one should think that the government found it easy to take it. We want less crowded classrooms, we don't tolerate overcrowded classrooms with students,” Conte added.

The directives of the Italian Ministry of Education envisage a series of measures to prevent COVID-19 infection, including entry and exit, special classes for different age groups of students, 40-minute teaching hours instead of 60, partly distance education, etc.

Since the start of the pandemic in Italy, 34,708 people have died as a result of the deadly virus and a total of 239,961 people have been infected.
