Greek coastguards rescued dozens of migrants in the Aegean today after their boat swamp off the coast of the island of Lesbos, state broadcaster North Aegean reported.

The ship sank a few hundred meters off the coast of Lesbos, with 51 people on board, most of them children. They had set off in the morning from the Turkish shores.

The migrants were placed in a 14-day quarantine, according to the country's COVID-19 protocol. The same procedure was followed for 16 other migrants who landed earlier on the south coast of the island.

Compared to the usual migration traffic from Turkey to the Greek Aegean islands, May has been a quiet month so far, with just 173 registered entries.

The calming of the situation came after Greece prevented migrants from the land and sea border with Turkey earlier this year as a result of the COVID-19 'explosion'.
