A German speaker, who admitted he deliberately infected himself with coronavirus, has said the disease was worse than he expected - after receiving a backlash for his controversial actions on social media.

The mayor of the Mitte district in Berlin said he wished to become infected himself, in order to develop immunity. He was deliberately infected by not being isolated from his girlfriend, who got the coronavirus while on holiday in Switzerland.

Stephan von Dassel, 53, said: "I think I'm fine, but I've been sick for a long time, longer than I thought.

"I was deliberately infected, to have fun and I thought, well you know, in three days I start to recover and gain immunity, and then I can't get infected again and I can't infect anyone else. But it was worse than I thought.

The 53-year-old said: "I was of the opinion that avoiding infection when being quarantined at home with an infected person, despite preventative measures, was very difficult to avoid, so I accepted that it would happen and I made sure to get infected as soon as possible.''

Some social media users criticized his actions on Twitter, saying his behavior was "disappointing and he was a bad example to everyone.

While Von Dassel has defended his actions, saying he was responsible.

'' I'm responsible for my own behavior and actions. I will continue to be quarantined until I no longer have the risk of infecting others. ''
