14,000 foreigners choose Albania to live and work
 
 There are over 14,000 foreigners who have chosen to live and work in Albania. The Albanian Institute of Statistics reported that in 2018, the number of foreigners with a residence permit in Albania was 14,162, with up to 9.7% increase compared to 2017.

The number of foreigners resident in 2018 is made up of 9,203 men, marking an increase of 9.9% compared to 2017, and 4,959 women, recording an increase of 9.6% compared to 2017.

The foreigners originating from Europe, during 2018, were 8,212 and account 58.0% of the total foreigners compared to 59.2% in 2017.

In 2018, the main reasons for residence permits are the reasons for employment and family unification.

6,893 irregular foreigners have been identified, with the majority of them occupying 44.8% of foreigners originating in Syria.

During 2018, there are 4,386 asylum seekers in Albania, with the majority of them - 49.0% - from Syria.

In 2018, there are 345 persons who have acquired Albanian citizenship, an increase of 9.2% compared to 2017.

640 people lost their Albanian citizenship in 2018, down 1.7% from 2017.

The number of foreigners with a residence permit in Albania in 2018 accounted for about 0.5% of all the resident population.

During 2018, the number of the resident population consists of 9,203 males and 4,959 females.

The pyramid of foreigners in Albania clearly reflects a gender imbalance, and females are relatively younger than males.

The number of applications for a residence permit in Albania in 2018 was 9,090, up by 0.7% compared to 2017. Applications by country of origin from Iran, Italy and Kosovo account for 63.8% of the total applications in 2018.

Applications from Iran were 13% higher in 2018, compared to a year earlier.

While the applications from Italians were down, with a reduction of about 4%.

The foreigners with a residence permit in Albania by country of origin in 2018 are headed by European countries, which account for 58.0% of total foreigners.

Foreigners originating from Europe are 8,212, 7.5% up compared to 2017.

Foreigners originating ifrom Asia are 4,022, 11.2% up compared to 2017.

Foreigners originating from America, Africa, and Oceania are 1,928, 16.8% up compared to 2017.

Irregular foreigners

There were 6,893 irregular persons in 2018, while in 2017 were 1,049,

By country of origin in 2018: Syria with 3,089 persons, Pakistan with 1,246 persons, Iraq with 671 persons, Palestine with 395 persons, Algeria 378 persons, Morocco with 344 persons and 770 persons from other countries.

Asylum seekers in Albania

Asylum seekers in Albania, referring to the Directorate of Asylum and Citizenship at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, result in 4,386 people in 2018, against 309 asylum seekers in 2017.

Analyzing the country of origin of asylum seekers in 2018, we find that most of the cases are those originating from Syria, with 2,150 asylum seekers, 645 asylum seekers from Pakistan, 447 asylum seekers from Iraq, 292 asylum seekers from Palestine, 227 asylum seekers from Algeria and from Morocco 227 asylum seekers.
