Serbia seeks the extradition of the former KLA fighter Tomor Morina

Serbia has submitted to the North Macedonian authorities a request for the extradition of former KLA member Tomor Morina arrested by Macedonian police on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by INTERPOL at Serbia's request. Further details on the Serbian party's request are not provided, while the Ministry of Justice in Skopje has to decide on the request.

The Council of the Criminal Court for Organized Crime in Skopje rejected on Friday the request of the defense for the release of Tomor Morina from the 30-day detention. Morina's lawyer, Naser Raufi said to Radio Free Europe he has confidence in a positive outcome in further proceedings in the case.

"We are working quickly on this case and after Belgrade submits the documentation, I will see them together with Tomor, but I do not believe that they will submit anything on their claims. In the end, the Minister of Justice decides. I think things are fine,” said Raufi.

The Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs of Northern Macedonia Bujar Osmani has considered Morina's arrest "intolerable" and demanded by the institutions his immediate release.

“Morina should be released. It is really a terrible thing what has happened because affects the relations between Northern Macedonia and Kosovo. Serbia's request applies to its citizens, while we have accepted the Kosovo citizens as Kosovo citizens”, Osmani declared.

The Prime Minister, Zoran Zaev, has said that in this case he will act in full compliance with local and international laws.

The arrest of Tomor Morina has prompted a widespread backlash in Pristina, which has demanded Skopje's immediate release of him, as well as rejecting "political arrest warrants issued by Belgrade".
