Russia retaliates by expelling two Swedish diplomats

Sweden's Foreign Ministry said its two diplomats have been expelled from Russia after Stockholm has refused visas for two Russian officials.

"Two Swedish diplomats have been asked to leave Russia, and we are sorry for this decision by the Russian Foreign Ministry," said the Swedish Foreign Ministry spokesman Rasmus Eljanskog.

He clarified that this move followed Stockholm's decision not to extend the visa to a Russian diplomat and to not allow to apply for a diplomatic visa another Russian citizen.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told reporters in Moscow that the deportation of diplomats was a response to Stockholm's decision to Russian officials.

Sweden has long been concerned by the threats of Russian spies.

Last year, intelligence authorities in Sweden have warned that Moscow "represents the greatest intelligence threat to Sweden."
