Albania's population continues the decline

Albania's population continues to shrinks. Data from the Institute of Statistics of Albania (ISA) show that on January 1 this year, the population was 2.86 million people, down 0.3 percent compared to the previous year.

The number of births continues to exceed the number of deaths, despite the fact that the gap between is narrowing over the years.

Meanwhile, ISA finds a decrease in the number of young people and an increase in the number of elderly people, which translates into the aging of the populations.

Only 3 districts experienced an increase in the population last year: respectively Tirana,  Durres and Vlora.

All the other cities suffered a shrinkage. Gjirokastra represents the lowest number of the population, accounting for 2.1% of the total population of Albania, followed by the Kukes Region, which accounts for 2.7%.
