Scandal: Albania publishes online data about its spies becoming a NATO problem

"Albania, NATO member country is publishing sensitive information about its top Internet intelligence operators, giving details of their identity, vehicles, operational roles, travel movements, and daily routines available to the public, creating a potentially dangerous breakthrough that could have international consequences." This is written in an "Independent" article published today.

The article states that the payroll data and expenditures published in the tables on the website of the Albanian Ministry of Finance show a detailed treasure trove on the State Intelligence Service, including the locations of offices as well as technicians and mechanics they use.

The data shows the names and identification cards numbers of nationals of intelligence service known locally and in the intelligence community as SHISH, operating domestically and internationally, including two sensitive posts at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Spreadsheets show the names, positions, salaries and expenses of at least eight major Albanian operators - some working under diplomatic service - in Belgium, Greece, Kosovo, Italy, Macedonia and Serbia.

Independent writes that it has not disclosed names or other identifying details to prevent consequences for low-level informers or others related to agency operatives.

Interestingly, the Albanian media itself refers to the English media - Independent - about this big scandal. This implies that the Albanian media is somewhat depersonalized and with very limited freedom to act.

While until now we have no reaction by the head of the Albanian Intelligence, Helidon Bendo. Everything will be clarified in the coming hours.
