After nearly six centuries, two of the greatest shields of European Christianity have been symbolically reunited. In a moving ceremony in Albania's capital, the legacies of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, and the national hero of Hungary, János Hunyadi, were brought together once more.

Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, alongside Hungarian President János Áder during his official visit to Albania, unveiled a commemorative plaque dedicated to János Hunyadi. The memorial was placed directly in front of the iconic statue of Skanderbeg, cementing a centuries-old brotherhood.

"There is no moment in the history of Skanderbeg where Hunyadi is not mentioned as a great statesman, a brilliant military commander, and a true friend of the Albanian people," Mayor Veliaj stated during the event. "Hunyadi is a monumental figure, not only for Hungary and Albania but for all of Europe. He represents a bond that marks forever the excellent, centuries-old relations between our nations."

Deepening Diplomatic Ties and a Shared European Vision

The ceremony carried profound diplomatic weight, coinciding with the 94th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Albania and Hungary.

Throughout his state visit, President Áder met with top Albanian leadership, including President Bujar Nishani, Prime Minister Edi Rama, and Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta. A central theme of these high-level discussions was the shared desire to deepen bilateral cooperation across economic and cultural sectors.

Crucially, President Áder reaffirmed Hungary’s unwavering commitment to Albania's future, reinforcing the message that Budapest will continue to act as a strong advocate for Albania's integration into the European Union.

By honoring the military alliance of Skanderbeg and Hunyadi from the 15th century, both nations have signaled that their modern European partnership is built on an unbreakable historic foundation.
