U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert as Tirana Environmental Protests Continue for Over a Month

The United States Embassy in Albania has issued a security alert warning that nightly protests in the Albanian capital are expected to continue in the coming days, urging U.S. citizens to avoid demonstration areas and remain vigilant as public gatherings persist outside government institutions.

The embassy said the demonstrations are taking place in front of the Prime Minister's Office on Tirana's Boulevard "Dëshmorët e Kombit," between Skanderbeg Square and Mother Teresa Square, where protesters have gathered each evening in recent weeks. According to the embassy, the demonstrations could continue for several more days and may potentially spread to other cities across Albania. While emphasizing that protests and large public gatherings often begin peacefully, the embassy cautioned that situations can change rapidly and unpredictably. The security advisory notes that increased police presence, road closures, traffic diversions, and significant transportation disruptions are likely in and around the protest area, particularly before and during the demonstrations. Authorities also warned that gatherings could expand beyond the immediate vicinity of the Prime Minister's Office to nearby government institutions and other parts of the capital.

The embassy advised American citizens to avoid all demonstrations, exercise heightened situational awareness, and minimize distractions such as using mobile phones or wearing headphones while moving through public spaces. Travelers and residents were also encouraged to monitor local media for the latest developments, keep emergency plans in place, identify safe exit routes, and maintain a low profile when traveling near areas where protests may occur. The advisory follows weeks of sustained anti-government demonstrations in Tirana, reflecting growing public dissatisfaction over a range of political and governance issues. Diplomatic missions routinely issue such security notices to inform their citizens of potential disruptions and to reduce the risk of being caught in situations that may escalate unexpectedly. At the time of the latest advisory, the embassy did not announce any changes to its operations but reiterated its recommendation that U.S. citizens remain cautious until the security situation stabilizes.
