SKOPJE, North Macedonia – An 18-year-old novice driver has been arrested after police caught him driving at 211 km/h on the Skopje–Tetovo motorway, more than double the legal speed limit for beginner drivers.
The incident occurred near the Kondovo interchange, where traffic police were conducting speed enforcement using radar equipment.
Caught Driving More Than Twice the Legal Speed Limit
According to North Macedonia's Ministry of Interior, officers recorded the driver, identified by the initials I.A. (18), traveling at 211 km/h while driving a Volkswagen Arteon with Skopje registration plates.
For novice drivers, the maximum permitted speed on the motorway is 100 km/h, meaning the teenager was driving at more than twice the legal limit.
Vehicle Confiscated, Driver Arrested
Due to the serious traffic violation, police immediately confiscated the vehicle and placed the young driver under arrest.
He was taken to a police station, where authorities initiated further legal procedures in accordance with North Macedonian traffic laws.
Officials have not released additional information regarding possible charges or penalties the driver may face.
Authorities Continue Road Safety Campaign
The case comes as authorities continue to intensify traffic enforcement across North Macedonia in an effort to reduce speeding and improve road safety.
Police have repeatedly warned that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of serious traffic accidents and fatalities, urging drivers—particularly inexperienced motorists—to comply with speed limits and traffic regulations.
