A 30-year-old tourist from Poland was successfully rescued late Monday night after becoming trapped in the rugged Gjipe Canyon in southern Albania, following a complex search-and-rescue operation that lasted more than five hours.
The rescue was completed at approximately 11:30 p.m., after emergency teams worked under extremely difficult conditions to reach and evacuate the injured man from the steep canyon terrain.
According to preliminary information, the tourist had been exploring the area with his fiancée when he fell into a ravine, leaving him stranded in a location that could only be accessed by specialized rescue personnel.
The operation involved officers from the Albanian State Police, Delta Force units, firefighters, and experienced mountaineers, who coordinated efforts to safely reach the victim despite the challenging landscape.
Authorities said the tourist suffered serious injuries, mainly to his ribs and other parts of his body. Due to the difficult topography, a rescue helicopter was unable to approach the site, making an aerial evacuation impossible.
Rescuers instead transported the injured man on a stretcher through the canyon until reaching an accessible area, where he was transferred to medical personnel and taken to hospital for further treatment.
