| A sudden and aggressive physical confrontation erupts among several individuals at a crowded gas station, drawing the attention of worried bystanders. |
According to Austrian media reports, the dispute is believed to have originated from a disagreement involving a woman. What began as a personal conflict quickly escalated into a serious violent encounter, with fists, baseball bats, and other blunt objects allegedly being used during the clash.
Security camera footage presented during the court proceedings reportedly showed one of the Syrian defendants driving a vehicle into the gas station area in a manner that forced one of the Kosovars to move quickly to avoid being struck.
The violence left at least one victim with severe injuries, including a fractured eye socket. According to his lawyer, the injured man still faces the possibility of permanent vision loss as a result of the attack.
Prosecutors charged all six individuals with participation in a violent brawl, while the main perpetrators also faced additional accusations related to coercion and attempted serious bodily harm. The defendants, aged between 21 and 28, were all reported to have previous criminal records.
During the trial, Judge Andreas Lenz strongly condemned the actions of those involved, stressing that weapons such as brass knuckles and baseball bats have no place in vehicles when they are intended to be used against other people.
Under the court's ruling, the three Kosovar defendants received lighter penalties ranging from diversion measures to eight months of effective imprisonment. The three Syrian nationals were handed significantly harsher sentences, ranging from two and a half years to six years in prison.
The case has generated considerable discussion in Austria due to the severity of the violence and the risks posed to innocent bystanders who happened to be present during the confrontation. Authorities emphasized that such incidents of public violence will continue to be met with strict legal consequences.
