Albania Foreign Arrivals Reach 3.7 Million in Jan–May 2026 as Kosovo and Italy Drive Tourism Growth

Kosovo remained the largest source of foreign arrivals to Albania in the January–May 2026 period, reaching 1,269,643 entries, marking a 9.9% increase year-on-year. The data confirms the continued dominance of cross-border mobility driven by proximity, family ties, and short-term travel patterns.

In May alone, Kosovo accounted for 32.3% of total foreign visitors, recording 368,815 entries. This reinforces its position as the single most important tourism and travel market for Albania’s inbound flow.

Italy, United Kingdom, France and United States Drive Strong Tourism Expansion in Albania

Italy ranked second with 464,465 entries, up 16.3%, reflecting both diaspora travel and rising leisure tourism. Italian demand continues to diversify beyond traditional visits, increasingly supported by cultural tourism and short stays.

The United Kingdom recorded 123,363 entries, up 15.5%, while France also posted double-digit growth, supported by expanding tour operator partnerships and packaged travel routes.

The United States registered 73,212 entries, a sharp 28.2% increase. A notable trend includes not only short-term tourism but also longer stays linked to digital nomads and retirees seeking lower living costs.

Balkan Travel Patterns Shift as North Macedonia and Montenegro See Declines

Regional mobility showed mixed performance across neighboring markets. North Macedonia fell by 3.2% to 298,500 entries, while Montenegro declined by 4.3% to 284,520 entries.

Greece was the only neighboring country to post growth, albeit modest at 1.6%, reaching 290,764 entries. These variations suggest shifting regional travel preferences and competition among Adriatic and Balkan destinations.

Germany, Turkey and Serbia Record Declines Amid Changing European Travel Demand

Germany recorded 109,592 entries, down 9.1%, signaling weaker demand from one of Europe’s key outbound tourism markets. Similarly, Turkey saw a 6.7% decrease.

Serbia also registered a decline compared to the same period in 2025. These decreases point to a broader redistribution of travel flows across Southern Europe, influenced by pricing, airline routes, and destination competition.

May 2026 Tourism Surge Pushes Albania Toward 3.7 Million Total Foreign Arrivals

In May 2026 alone, Albania recorded 1,143,595 foreign entries, a significant rise compared to 987,077 in May 2025. The strong monthly performance indicates accelerating seasonal demand ahead of the peak summer period.

Overall, Albania reached 3.7 million foreign arrivals in the January–May 2026 period, representing an 8.2% annual increase. The growth reflects continued expansion in tourism infrastructure, rising international visibility, and diversified source markets beyond the traditional regional base.
